Boys' Basic Shirt Pattern (Age 2 Years) / Full Measurement Guide, Cutting & Stitching Tutorial

Sewing a little shirt for your toddler? This Boys' Basic Shirt Pattern (Age = 2 Years) includes all the pieces you need: Front (with chest pocket) , Back, Sleeve, Collar, and Cuff/Placket. Every measurement below is listed in both centimeters and inches so you can follow along easily, whichever unit you prefer.

⚠️ Tip: Always check whether your traced pattern includes seam allowance. If not, add 0.75–1 cm (0.3–0.4 in) around all cutting edges before cutting your fabric, since small children's garments need a slightly smaller allowance than adult wear.

How to Cut the Fabric

1. Pre-wash and iron the fabric first — children's shirts are usually made from cotton, which can shrink after the first wash.
2. Fold the fabric with right sides together along the grainline for symmetrical cutting.
3. Lay out your pieces:
◦ Front: cut 2 (mirrored) if it's a button-front shirt, or 1 on the fold for a pullover style.
◦ Back: cut 1 on the fold.
◦ Sleeve: cut 2 (mirrored).
◦ Collar: cut 2 (one main collar + one under-collar/facing), plus interfacing if desired.
◦ Cuff/Placket: cut 2 for cuffs (one per sleeve) and additional strips for the front placket if the shirt is button-up.
◦ Pocket: cut 1 small chest pocket piece (10 cm × 9 cm).
4. Add seam allowance (0.75–1 cm / 0.3–0.4 in) around all edges before cutting, if not already included in the pattern.
5. Mark key points: shoulder notches, armhole curve points, and pocket placement using tailor's chalk or a fabric marker.
6. Cut carefully, especially around the small curves of the neckline, armholes, and collar — these areas need precision for a clean children's garment finish.

How to Stitch the Shirt

Step 1: Attach the Chest Pocket
• Fold and press the top edge of the pocket (10 cm width) down as a facing.
• Fold the remaining edges under along the seam allowance.
• Topstitch the pocket onto the front panel at the desired position — usually just above chest level, slightly off-center.

Step 2: Sew the Shoulder Seams
• With right sides together, pin Front and Back pieces at the shoulders (10 cm shoulder width).
• Stitch and press the seam open or toward the back.

Step 3: Attach the Collar
• Sew the two collar pieces (15 cm length) right sides together along the outer edge, leaving the neckline edge open.
• Trim the seam allowance, turn right-side out, and press flat.
• Pin and stitch the collar to the neckline, matching center back and shoulder points, with the 2 cm neck drop and 0.5 cm neckline dip as your guide.

Step 4: Attach the Sleeves
• With right sides together, match the sleeve cap (30 cm width, 9 cm cap height) to the armhole opening (17.5 cm side length on both front and back).
• Ease the fullness evenly around the curve and stitch.
• Press the seam allowance toward the sleeve.

Step 5: Sew Side Seams (Body + Sleeve Together)
• Stitch continuously from the sleeve cuff opening, down through the underarm, and along the side seam to the hem, in one pass.
• Repeat for the other side.
• Press seams open.

Step 6: Finish the Sleeve Placket & Cuff
• Cut a small slit at the sleeve hem for the placket opening, then bind it with the placket strip for a clean finish.
• Gather the sleeve hem slightly to fit the cuff (10.5 cm length, 8 cm width).
• Attach the cuff with right sides together, enclosing the raw edge inside, then topstitch to finish.
• Add a small button and buttonhole to close the cuff.

Step 7: Sew the Front Closure (if button-up)
• Fold and stitch the front placket strips along both front edges.
• Mark and sew buttonholes evenly spaced down one side, with matching buttons on the other.

Step 8: Hem the Shirt
• Fold the bottom hem (30 cm back width, matching front width) to your preferred finished length.
• Press and stitch around the entire hem for a neat, durable edge.

Step 9: Final Pressing & Quality Check
• Press all seams — shoulders, sleeves, collar, cuffs, and hem — for a polished look.
• Check that all seams are secure, since children's clothes go through a lot of movement and washing.
• Trim any loose threads.

Final Tips
• Since this is a small child's garment, use a finer needle (size 70/10 or 80/12) and shorter stitch length for cleaner, more delicate seams.
• Finish raw edges with a serger, zigzag stitch, or French seams for extra durability — kids' clothes get washed often!
• Consider using soft, breathable cotton fabric for comfort, especially around the collar and cuffs.

Happy sewing! 🧵👶
